We have reorganised how all children will be collected while the building work is going on. Here are the new arrangements:

We ask all parents to:

Collect their child on time
Walk or cycle to and from school if at all possible
Leave the school as quickly as possible to avoid traffic disruption and so we can use the ball courts for PE and other sports activities.
On Mondays only half the ball court will be available for Parking at 2.20pm because Paula will be using the other half for sports club .

1. Junior Infants will be collected as normal.
2. Senior Infants will be walked out of the new door which will be built and lined up where they will be collected. We ask that all parents are patient and allow the teacher time to make sure that each child is safely in the hands of their collector.
3. First Class will be collected from the same exit now. They will be walked out of the school and lined up in two lines as shown in the diagram. They will then be dismissed individually by their teacher.
4. Second class will be collected from the front of the school to the right of the main door. We ask that all parents keep the main door free so the children can walk out.
5. Third Class can be collected at the front of the school as shown on the diagram. We ask that all the children walking home on their own use the lollipop lady when crossing the road.

Extra curricular Activities

Monday: Sport – children to be collected from the top ball court.

Drama – Children to be collected from the main entrance

Tuesday: Homework Club – collected at side entrance

Arabic – Collected at the side entrance

Wednesday: Art Class – Jenny’s group from the main entrance and Orlagh’s group from the side entrance.

Catholic Religion Class – children collected from the side entrance.

Thursday: Music Class – children to be collected from the main entrance.

Homework Club – children to be collected from the side entrance.

It is great to be the bearer of good news. Work on our school extension will begin next Monday. The contractors are Western Building Services and they will be setting up a site compound in the land adjoining the school. There will a change to the collection of children which is illustrated on the diagram at the back of this newsletter. We are very lucky to be getting this work done in the current climate and I would appeal to all families to be patient in the mornings and evenings as there will be some disruption. This is a great day for our school and a tribute to all the families who put their faith in us less than three years ago when we opened for the very first time.

Extra curricular activities have started again this term and are proving to be a great success. Our English language classes for parents and Maths for fun in first class are being enjoyed by all and many thanks to Tom for all his help in

this area

We are currently preparing a time capsule which we will plant beside our art project. The children have all contributed to this and we will shortly be asking all our parents to put something into the capsule as well. The school will be celebrating Mother Languages day on February 22^nd and we have lots of exciting events planned.

Parent teacher meetings will take place on the 8^th and 9^th of February after school. You should all have an appointment by now. Contact your class teacher if you still do not have an appointment for parent teacher meetings.

We have been reviewing our code of behaviour over the last term. This has now finished and we will be sending home a copy to every family in the school in the next two weeks.

The committee of the Parent Teacher Association is hoping to buy some musical instruments for the school. They will be having an informal social night in the coming month.

Please have your questions ready for all politicians knocking on your door about parking and cuts to school funding etc. This is the time when the politicians have to listen and I would urge you all to prioritise these issues with the local election candidates.

We will be sending out our brown envelopes in the coming weeks and we would really appreciate if every family could give what they can. I would also like to thank all of you who have a monthly standing order for the school.

Enrolment

The enrolment procedure in the school is based on a first come first served basis. It is very important younger brothers and sisters are put on the pre-enrolment list as soon as possible. Forms can be downloaded from our website at www.lucaneastet.com or are available from the school office.

We have just completed our first round of offers to Junior Infants and we will begin our second round of offers next week. It is very important to remember that the sooner a child’s name is put on the list the more chance they have of securing a place in the school.

Lesley is our school secretary and is always willing to answer any enrolment issues you may have.

Parent Teacher meetings take place next Tuesday and Wednesday after school. All after school clubs are cancelled next Tuesday and Wednesday due to parent teacher meetings

Artists

Over the past week we have had two artists in the school working with the children. They won a competition to design a piece of art for the school. As part of this work the children have been coming up with their own designs which will form part of the sculpture and preparing a time capsule which will form part of the project.

Over the coming weeks each class will be posting images of the work they have been doing with the professional artists so watch this space!!.

Bad Weather

I would like to thank everybody in the school for all their great efforts during the recent snow. We made every effort to open the school every morning if it was at all possible.

In an effort to make up the time lost, the staff have agreed to have our monthly staff meetings from February to June outside of school hours. This means that from February to June the school will close at 1.20pm for infants and 2.20pm for the other classes on staff meeting days instead of the current 12.30pm finish. The staff will then have their staff meeting after school has finished.

The board of management of the school has thanked the staff for this and for all the extra work they do outside of school hours throughout the year.

Principal’s News

Welcome back to another action packed year at Lucan East ETNS. This will be a very exciting year in the development of the school which will see our new extension being built. News at the moment is that building will commence in February with a completion date in August.

The school will be closed on January 21^st for teacher training. The teachers will be working on the Music, Drama, History and Geography plans for the school.

Last term second class took part in the maths for fun project where parents come in to school to work with the teachers and children in maths. It was a great success and was thoroughly enjoyed by all the parents and children. This term maths for fun will run in first class Norway. We hope that parents in this class can get involved so watch this space!!

We hope that language classes for parents will start again in the next few weeks. English classes for parents are on Wednesdays at 1.30pm. Extra curricular activities start back next week.

Margaret Callan Bergin from the board of management has joined the children’s green school committee. We have purchased a bin for the front of the school and we would like all litter to be put in it. The school recycles all paper and plastic and also has a compost bin which will be used as fertilizer for the garden.

Parent teacher meetings will take place on the 8^th and 9^th of February after school. You will shortly be given an appointment time by your class teacher. Parent teacher meetings are an opportunity to sit down with your child’s teacher away from the busy classroom to discuss their progress.

We have been reviewing our code of behaviour over the last term and we have sought the views of children, parents, staff and the board of management. We hope that this will be finished in February.

The committee of the parent teacher association committee will be meeting this month to plan what they are going to do for the rest of the year. School calendars are still for sale from the office.

Please mention the need for extra parking facilities in our school to any election candidates looking for your vote in the upcoming election. There is lots of land next door that could be used until it is built upon.

There are many other exciting events taking place in the school over the coming months and I urge you to get involved. All help will be greatly appreciated from helping with reading to stewarding the car park.

Margaret’s Marvellous Music

Margaret Faherty will be running a new extra curricular music class. Below are some of the items covered during this class.

Week 1

Song Singing: Name that tune

Identify all the cartoons in the song.

Talk about tempo of song.

Learn to sing the song, break up into groups with a group singing a verse

Word search related to the song

Identify body parts for percussion- clapping, flicking, stamping, rubbing etc. Make loud and soft sounds.

Clap the beats of each child’s name. Write name with a different colour for each beat

Week 2

Review Song Name that Tune

Pictures with 2/ 3/ 4 beats. Identify item and clap the beat

Story of Little red Riding hood using body sounds.

Listen to a piece of music and respond with drawing

Extra Curricular Classes

This term we will continue to offer a selection of classes after school for the children in first, second and third class. Each class will be run by a member of staff in the school for 10 weeks and will take place between 2.20pm and 3.20pm. Each class will cost €20 for ten sessions We expect that all children who take part in these classes follow all the school rules and show the best possible behaviour.

Monday – Sport

Paula will run this class and the children will have the opportunity to take part in a number of different sports especially adapted to suit younger children. Cheques or cash payable to Paula Mc Gee.

Monday – Drama

This class will be given by one of our new teachers, Karen Davis who is a qualified Speech and Drama teacher. Cheques or cash payable to Karen Davis.

Tuesday – Homework Club

This club will be run by Paula and gives the children an opportunity to do their homework under the supervision of a teacher. Cheques or cash payable to Paula Mc Gee.

Wednesday – Art Class

This class will be run by Jenny. Materials etc will be supplied. Cheques or cash payable to Jenny Byrne

Thursday – Homework club

This club gives the children an opportunity to do their homework under the supervision of a teacher. The club will be run by either Elaine or Linda. Cheques or cash payable to Elaine Farnan.

Thursday – Music

Margaret will run this new club which will focus on all aspects of music from song singing to instruments, eg tin whistle. Cheques or cash payable to Margaret Faherty.

Arabic classes and Catholic religion classes are also available in the school. Please ask in the office for details. Classes will start the week beginning 17^th January 2011.

I would just like to thank all the children and staff for the great shows we were all treated to last week. There was a great atmosphere in the school last week and the theme of togetherness was a great success.

School closes on Thursday at 12.00pm sharp. I will open the doors for Junior and Senior Infants at 11.45am to ease the amount of traffic in the school at the one time.
