Yesterday February 22nd was “Mother Language Day”. We all celebrated the many languages people in our school speak and learned lots of new ways to say “hello” to our friends. Some moms and dads came into school to teach us rhymes in their mother language and we sang songs in Irish, English and even French for them. We all made beautiful flags to represent all of the countries people in our class are linked to, every flag had an Irish flag on the back.
Some of the boys and girls in Romania class made their own board game today. We decorated all the numbers from one to twenty and stuck them on this huge snake. We are going to add some smaller snakes and some ladders aswell. We can’t wait to start playing our new game.
To celebrate Chinese New Year, we all made colourful paper lanterns. This year is the year of the Rabbit in the Chinese calendar.
This week we learned about the names of different parts of flowers and how they grow. We have some daffodils in our class and we check them everyday to see if they have opened yet.
We recently had some visitors to our classroom. Mark and Maree and their daughter Ella came to work with us on the school time capsule. They will be making a sculpture for outside our school and under this we will bury a time capsule filled with photographs and drawings from everybody in our school. It’s really exciting to think that in the future the time capsule will be dug up and people will be able to look at the things we made in 2011. We drew pictures of some of our favourite foods, these are going to be used in the pattern on the outside of the scultpure. We can’t wait until its finished to see everybody’s work.
This week in Romania class we learned about farming. We noticed that there are lots of differences between how farms work now and how people used to farm a long time ago. We watched a video of how butter was made by hand, before people had machines to do all the work for them! In class, we made our own butter.
We started with cream and working together we shook it
and then we shook it some more
and some more
until it turned into butter.
We had to pour out some liquid before we could try the butter. We spread our butter on crackers to try it, it was so tasty!
All the children in Romania class are great artists and are always creating fantastic images. Last week, we looked at the work of Wassily Kandinsky and inspired by his work, created our own concentric circles. After colouring our circles in crayon we used a watercolour wash to fill in the background. The paint didn’t cover the crayon but magically filled in the white spaces on the paper!
We were learning the names of lots of different colours and decided to make some flowers using as many colours as possible. We used old chocolate wrappers and a selection of paper with different textures to make our flowers look beautiful, some children chose to colour in their petals themselves.
We love to work together in Romania class, during maths lessons we often work with a partner, figuring things out together. Our teacher has lots of great maths games and resources to help us have fun while we are learning.
The boys and girls in Romania class have been working really hard this term. Everybody has been trying to do their best work and to remember to use kind words to their friends and teachers. Some of the boys and girls in Romania Class with their friends in Spain Class made chocolate buns recently to share with their classmates.
